kirtan

The Heart Space Center hosts monthly donation-based Kirtan at Ananda Yoga Space in Garden City, Idaho.

Check our Upcoming Events page for future Kirtan dates.

What is Kirtan?

Kirtan, derived from the Sanskrit word 'kirtana' meaning "to praise or glorify", is a form of devotional singing rooted in ancient Indian traditions. It's essentially a call-and-response style of chanting sacred mantras, often accompanied by traditional Indian instruments like the harmonium, tabla, and cymbals. While deeply connected to Hinduism, specifically Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of love & devotion), kirtan can be embraced by people of any background, as the focus is on the communal experience and fostering a sense of connection with the divine or a higher power.

*The Kirtan we offer is intended to be non-denominational. Although the nature of Kirtan includes chanting to deities, the belief is that we are honoring what they represent as a reflection of the various aspects and expressions of our human experience. Rather than something outside of ourselves.

maha mantra

Hare Krishna (x2) Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama (x2) Rama Rama Hare Hare

“Maha Mantra” (Great Mantra) is chanted by lovers of Krishna. There are 2 main interpretations of its meaning. 1st - it can be seen more as a Vaishnav mantra, since Rama & Krishna are both avatars of Vishnu, also called Hari (in the evocative case becomes "hare," as in "O Hari"). 2nd, it can be seen more as expressing the love of Radha & Krishna. - Bhakti Breakfast Club

"In the Maha Mantra, the word Hare is a form of the name Hara, which means divine energy and thereby indicates Radha. By chanting this mantra, one simultaneously supplicates both Radha & Krishna. The great saint Chaitanya taught that one who attains success in this chanting will experience the true meaning of love." ~ Krishna Dharma

"These three words, namely Hare, Krishna, & Rama, are the transcendental seeds of the Maha Mantra. The chanting is a spiritual call for the Lord & His (feminine) energy to give protection to the conditioned soul. The chanting is exactly like the genuine cry of a child for its mother's presence." ~ A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

"Maharaj-ji always said that the Hare Krishna mantra was the 'Mahamantra,' the Great Mantra, & it was chanted constantly in his temples whenever he was there." ~ Krishna Das
